Winter Wonderland

ventouxsnow11

Welcome home (almost) Hugh and happy birthday kate!

Wished y'all could have been here today on the top of the ventoux for sledging! We were remebering Amy and Beth and Jess a few years back. I had to drag Julian away from his computer where he has been installing a VERY IMPORTANT new thing for several days now. By the time he was up there of course he was already talking about coming down, dropping me, going up again and spending a day skiing, coming again tomorrow for the winter wonderland experience! It was very strange to come down to olive pickers and warmth....

Good to know Hugh and Margaret are in such good and loving hands, even if the space is cramped. We keep trying to ring but you are always engaged...good sign I suppose!

Love to you all.

Update

Dad was discharged yesterday afternoon and began his continuing course of antibiotics by tablet form. Consequently he now has no gut fauna and a runny tummy to add to his list of woes. The pain is basically under control but it is still there so he's continuing to take paracetamol to keep it at bay. I reckon on mum and dad staying till new year - or at the very least until the course of antibiotics is over - by then the pain should have gone I guess, but they'll be gagging for showers and home comforts. We'll play it be ear, one day at a time. If more medical consultation is needed later in the week then we are still on hand if the folks are with us, but hopefully no more hospital visits will be necessary in the short term...not until dad has discussed the whole scenario with his GP, any road.

We'll watch some films today and try tyo polish off a bit more of the turkey - and Steve is on his way over too. keep the calls coming in.

Pete

Welcome back!

This must mean you are more comfortable and that they have things under control as it's not the threatened 5 days in hospital, hurrah! Happy Christmas!!!
When do they decide about the long term future of the troublesome organ?
I suppose it must have been Mum and Dads only Christmas and Wedding Anniversary apart,in 55years. Thank goodness you where all there to support them.

This week I have mostly been cooking fowl!!
Goose on Thursday....Courtesy of Lidl.
Saturday bootiful Turkey....Local.
Today I will be dressing Pheasants found hang by the back door....Very local.
We have a surfeit of feathered friends.

Yesterday as you know was Kate's 13th birthday and after five years of longing is now the owner of a phone, so texts may be coming your way, but reception is still patchy here and she may have to go to the park and stand on the slide to get a signal and there could be a.....(line of people. Sorry I have temporarily forgotten how to spell that word)of fellow teenagers with new phones,Ha!Ha!
On her behalf..Thank you Mum and Dad for the W.H.Smiths tokens, I expect that she will be off to Aberystwyth next week with Lisa to spend their gift tokens as she also has one for New Look.
I shall be in the kitchen of Rhosychan for the week where my kitchen crew amuse me by snapping 'Yes Chef' when I ask then to do something.
After that I shall be free to come visiting, depending on how the land lies with everyone.
Thomas and Edmund have exams in two weeks.. Thomas, two AS level sciences papers.
And Edmund has to resit(Mrs Lewis is making the whole class resit as she was disappointed in them!!)one Physics paper.
And a Mrs Stevens says Edmund is very unlucky with equipment(I think she was being uncharacteristically kind,) so he has to resit his Chemistry practical as his equipment broke, and whilst he and Ms Stevens were trying to organize new working equipment for him, the technician threw away his solution. So she has had to make up a whole new Practical AS level experiment just for him.
And I see he also has a Maths resit which is unlike him but I think he had the flu that day. So we have a busy/serious January ahead.

My friend Nikki is still awaiting the arrival of her second child.... due 23rd no appearance.... Maybe Kate's birthday...no baby yesterday.....so now she's decided it will be New Year...Poor soul she was as big as a house when we last saw her in October.

Lots of Love to everyone thinking of you all, between oven temperatures that is

Hew's back, Hew's 'appy!

He's out of hospital, enjoying a nice hot cuppa and chocolate biscuit. All sitting round a blazing fire and anticipating a bit of belated Christmas cheer together! No dietary constraints apparently, which will make things easier. All callers welcome (by phone or in person).

Update from Forty Green

Hi Folks - and belated Christmas greetings to one and all.

What with one thing and another, only just managed to read all the latest postings and one from us is well overdue. Pete came back from taking Margaret to see Hugh again this afternoon a short while ago. It would seem that Hugh will remain in the hospital for the duration of the course of antibiotics - about 5 days in all - and seems a lot more comfortable now. He's come off the drip and only gets the intravenous medication when it's necessary and it only takes about 20 minutes so he's more comfortable in that respect as well. He took food by mouth today too, so things are generally looking up ('mushroom soup' not quite up to the standards he's used to though - the description made it sound more like brawn!). The outlook is that he will have his gall bladder removed at some time in the not-too-distant future. Two schools of thought on this: a) operation to remove gall bladder whilst inflamed, b) remove gall bladder by key-hole surgery once ok. Not sure who decides what or when!

Margaret is, as you may have gathered, still with us at Forty Green and will (all things being equal) remain so until Hugh is discharged at least. Feeling a bit brighter herself today after a bath and hair wash before going to see her beloved. Considering everything, we've had a pretty fab time of it and the girls have been great too, rallying round and helping keep spirits up. Amy and Nana are great at 'I Spy'!

Thanks for keeping in touch with everyone Steve, and thanks to all those who have succeeded in phoning - Margaret has enjoyed being able to speak with you and, now that her concerns over Hugh's condition being life-threatening have been allayed, is much more content and far less anxious generally, as you can imagine. Christmas Day and wedding anniversary have not been what they would have wished for themselves, but Margaret has put a very brave face on it and it's a delight and pleasure having her here with us.

Love to you all
Jan and Pete

message from babu

babus christmas

poor dad and how's mum?

babu2

we are so very sad to hear about patrick. we spoke to him this morning. the nurse was very sweet saying he had had a restful night and she put us straight through to him. it must be so miserable spending christmas in a ward, and with strange women....poor thing..... i was wondering if these pics of babu, the beautiful kitten he and margaret sent us when they left here last autumn, might cheer him up....? our thoughts are very much with him.

...and, we are wondering how margaret is doing? are you all at peter's? anyone around to skype?

we got a very scrambled message from you nick, i think...? couldn't figure out a word, but the thought was lovely.

it is snowing lightly here and we are very slowly preparing a mallard and listening to the carols from kings college and kate rusby's christmas album. i have talked to my mum in her italian trulli and my brother in bangkok. we did the traditional french christmas eve last night with crustacea and presents (babu was more interested in the presents than the tree this year. typical teenager!). this year, in the spirit of the credit crunch, julian and i agreed just to get each other things we could make - which put him at a distinct advantage! - so i got six (as yet unfinished) home made frames for all the unframed small paintings in our house that have hitherto been perched amongst cookbooks, and i took courage in both fingertips and mastered excel just enough to make him a jolly database with pictures 'n all for his print editions - which illegible data had previously been sellotaped on to seventy five empty boxes under my desk, so all the boxes have gone to the dump and hopefully the paintings will soon be on the walls not inbetween chocolate soufflé and lemon tart, and the house will be a happier less cluttered one. this morning poskie came to say happy christmas in bed and made himself into an excellent furry pillow for our sleepy heads.

all our love to all of you.

current state

Dad wants a hairbrush but apart from not being very chatty is ok.. he has seen doctor at 9am and there are 3 other patients in the ward at the moment not all males.
Whether there are gall stones or not they can't be sure even with the scan because there could be small ones which can be troublesome and not show up.
Either way there will be no operation procedures until the inflamation has settled and we don't know yet what's required.

Visiting times:
3pm - 8pm

Policy on cut flowers and plants:
Not allowed

Dad...

...we're around all day for skyping.. although maybe out for a short walk at some point... poor dad, have you seen him this morning?

Best Place

Grandad was admitted to Ward 6 at Stoke Mandeville shortly after midnight this morning after having 3 large doses of IV antibiotics and will be in hospital for a number of days.

He has been suffering with abdominal pain we know, but not quite how bad.
The CT scan revealed an inflamed gall-bladder or Cholecystitis
for which he will be on painkillers antibiotics and a low fat diet.

Now we're feeling Christmassy

Clive has decorated the tree with the new tinsel, I've finished the wrapping and we laughed our socks off to the 1977 Christmas edition of 'The Good Life' titled 'Silly but its fun'. What good year '77 was....enjoy family.

Part 3

Forty Green is home for Christmas

Brought Mum and Dad over this affy and we are snuggling in with a cup of tea and I am about to light the fire. Unfortunately it is water only for Dad and Jan has had similar tummy problems so pray that we are all back to normal by Thursday or it will be a bit of broiled fish all round.

Happy Birthday Pete

snow5

Happy Birthday Pete! And get well soon Patrick! Here are some snowy olive branches for peace and wellbeing.

We are doing better after three weeks of the lurgy. Just kept going round in circles...but today the sun shone (another first in a while) and there is christmas cake snow on the top of the mountain, and I have cleaned the house almost from top to bottom and we are just about to get out the twinkly lights. We will miss you all at Christmas and wish we could be with you. Must get the heating sorted out in this freezing house!

Meanwhile the adoption news has taken a small turn. We were not selected in the last commission in Mali so it will, if we are selected in the next, be at least two more years before we meet our baby. So we are looking into adopting a sibling group from Haiti, where I hear you can get a couple of kids practically by return of post, so maybe this will be our last christmas à deux after all...who knows. We so hope so. We always feel the absence very sorely at this time of year, though of course we count our many blessings too.

Anyway this is just to say we will be thinking of you and toasting you all over the next week, and sending you lots of love.

'appy burfday to Pete

Many happy returns of the day Pete, I hope you're celebrating in style!

Ouch dad that sounded like no fun - Ruh and i are just finally getting over nearly three weeks of coughs and sore throats.. just in time for the big eat.

Lots of love, Julian

Sorry, Nic - my fault

In time you start to forget things and I had thought you and Julian were nearer, but it was at the time when I was working at Lloyds bank and Mum was having words with our District Nurse, who didn't want me home, to get in her way. She was a funny old thing, but now we have confirmation from you that it was in 1960, so now we will remember!! Love from Dad

Grandad's been poorly

Something to do with eating out of date food, but on Thursday night 18th, I had the most terrible gripes. Mum was in bed, but it was more than I could stand and I did a 999 at 11.20. After a while, an ambulance turned up, with a young girl ambulance 'man' who had come from Brackley and was apologizing for being on her own as her male partner was off sick. Did i think i needed an ambulance to take me to the hospital. Yes I said as I was in awful pain and she called an ambulance from Towcester, about 15 miles away,, with two men, who set about getting me ready for hospital. So I wakened Mum and she wanted to accompany me to the Horton hospital in Banbury. Bumpy roads at 1 AM Did me no good at all, but in due course I was in the A&E, where things took their course, ECG's etc. After what seemed hours, I saw a young Asian doctor, who prodded me about and eventualy sent me to X-ray, to make sure that my stomach pains were not something dreadful. We left A&E at about 0320 and got a taxi home and for the next day or two I had to suffer these awful stomach pains, until this morning when I was able to get rid of what was causing the upset. Mum was being great and Steve also turned up to give me his moral support, on Friday and Saturday and even today. Well that's about it, but I do not want a repetition of food poisoning. By tomorrow, I hope to be my old self, able to fulfill the programme that you have mapped out for us. Love to you all, and especially to Pete on his birthday. from Dad

More on Birthdays

Just noticed the birthdays calender thingy on the right, well as my 50th is coming up, you should all be a ware that the year I was born wasn't 1961 as stated; 1960 will do nicely please mod.

Happy Birthday Peter

I'd like to be the first to wish you a happy Bithday Peter. It's 8.00 am on Sunday, 21st, nice bright sunny day too.

So what do you give a man who already has all that he needs? I'd like to give you a big hug and wish you a very happy birthday, and as I can't be there, I'd just like everyone to give you one more hug, from me. And here's a picture of a puffer for you.

Busy Day

Arrived for MOT at 11am, deposited car at JayBe garage and walked into Banbury as far as Sainsbury's - sat down and had a coffee, bought some pants for Mum and hitched a lift in a Jag back to JayBe .
Mot'd but needed to replace ball joint in front nearside as there was excessive play. Taken home while work was being done and collected at 5pm when job was completed. Mot'd for £128.10, which was not too bad. At least we are safe for another year. Now I can tax it on line for £145.
Watched Royal Command on telly and enjoyed most of it, except for girl singers and ?Geraldine, as I expected some comedy from HIM. I am still waiting to be convinced about Peter Kay, but the Welsh comic was cheeky/funny, I thought. See you all soon. Love from Dad

Mum and Dad's itinerary

Hello family

Mum and Dad are invited to Forty Green over Christmas and Peter will be going up to Kings Sutton on the 22nd to collect them. Dad won't need to take his car as Peter and Steve will be doing the ferrying.

Mum and Dad will be zipped off to Oxford by Peter for a celebration meal at Hertford Street on Christmas Eve, and again, Peter will collect them at a reasonable hour that same evening and take them back to Bledlow so they can wake up in their own time on Christmas morning and enjoy the festivities of Christmas with our young and easily excitable children. Steve, Clive, Gemma and Will can also wake up in their own time too, which may be a welcome respite depending on how late they stay up....

On Boxing Day Steve will come over to Forty Green and miraculously transport Mum and Dad to Wales where I expect he will stay overnight. Cathy and John have invited Mum and Dad for the rest of that week, but Cathy is working as of the 29th. To finish off this part of Mum and Dad's week, Peter will go up to Wales with the older girls on the weekend, probably Sunday the 28th, and return to KS on the Monday after what I hope will have been a fun night in Wales, especially for all those young cousins.

As for New Year, Pete and Jan are out with Pam and Steve on the 31st but they have invited anyone who wishes to to come round for a New Year's Day meal at Forty Green. Steve says he is coming, Mum and Dad will be coming of course and all others are welcome. This will be a bit more of a bring and share, with details to be finalised once we know what left-overs we all have from Christmas!

Roll on the festive season and Merry Christmas to all. Hope this makes it all clear.

Thanks for the kitten post, Gemma. Have you seen the talking cats on u-tube. They are very good for a laugh too!

I had a few emails at work telling me about the university teaching materials now being on itunes, thought may be of interest to bloggers, and it is completely free of charge to the public.

You wait for ages for a bus, then three come together

Nic, thank goodness you were not aware of the awful attacks in Mumbai, too close though! It must have been very scarry for Jen. Clare and Daniel sound on good form and I'm glad to hear you had a good holiday.
Edmund has been teaching himself Japanese(I only found out last month, he says he has been at it for about a year)And for Christmas he says he would like some Japanese langauge flash cards, he is interested in Japanese cartoons, and I thought you may know something about flash cards. And as Clare is into Pocamon you may know something of this kind of thing, as you see I don't realy understand what he's talking about, But any thoughts?
Monday morning 8.30 there is a phone call from the residential centre up above Penrhyncoch where I will be working the week after Christmas, to say that their chef has hurt his leg and could I fill in for a couple of days, a couple of days turned into a week and then on friday it became apparent that it would be two weeks, this is abit awkward as the days are long with a 1hr 15min journey at each end of the day and at home we haven't yet done any prepetation for Christmas.
And next week John is on a course in Litchfield, he has opted to join an organization that will look after his insurances and legal obligations to the FSA, and although they won't be bringing him any work, at least he won't have to worry so much about compliancing. He's happier already!!Hallilulah!!
So Christmas is going to be abit intense, just like for proper people with real jobs!! Kate is feeling the lack of Christmasyness, its easy to forget that she is only 12yrs, cause she looks about 16yrs. But I hoping Steve and Mum and Dad can manage to get over here for a few days, weather premitting and it will all come together.
Dad how are your ribs after that prat fall, not too sore I hope. Thank you I got your post but I'm a bit puzzled but I will speak to you later today.

NEWS FROM NIC

Dear Folks
Sorry but I’ve been away from the computer for sometime time. So here’s the full update.
I went to India, Ahmedabad, on Saturday 22 November arriving back in Singapore on the Wednesday morning. The following day we learned of the terrible events in Mumbai, which is a short distance from Ahmedabad. Anyway, my trip to India was very interesting and we were well looked after and all fine.
Then on Friday morning (28th) we were scheduled to fly out to Phuket on holiday with the Arsenal Soccer School the kids attend. That was also touch and go but the events in Mumbai took over from the concerns in Thailand and although the entire Sng family was advising Jen not to go because of the potential of a military coup, I persuaded everyone to get in the taxi and go to Changi and take it from there. Now Phuket Airport hadn’t got caught up in the whole affair so our plane left on schedule and arrived without fuss, the airport was as per usual. The Kids enjoyed some fine weather for football and Claire played admirably, developing over the two days into a sterling defender. Her team topped the 3 Arsenal teams but the Thai teams were really very fast and strong and we saw some unbelievable football from their under 9 teams. We stayed on in Phuket when the others left on Sunday, swimming, snorkeling etc. and we arrived back about midnight last night.
We have had a wonderful 2-3 weeks and have plenty to post on the blog.
Claire received her book thank you; she’s up for learning a few girly things as long as it doesn’t involve Barbie dolls and stuff. The book is OK she says, so that’s an affirmative. Daniels present was also here when he got home so he opened it this morning. Daniel’s looks forward to throwing the flight ball to me but our street outside is pretty much a building site these days we we will need to go and find an open space.
Glad to hear you are all well, we will speak later today.

Love from Nic, Jen and the children

Visit to The Fleece

We had a nice ride out last week, to look at the place where Gemma is to hold her wedding reception, through all those lovely north Oxfordshire and Warwickshire/Gloucestershire/Worcestershire villages to have a meal and a pint of Hooky.
We all had a good time. We went via Shipston-on-Stour, almost to Chipping Camden. Steve drove, in my car, which held us all comfortably.
Nic
We hope you are all OK as you are often offline when we try to Skype you. You are now 8 hours ahead of us so it is a little more difficult to judge the times, as either you are at work or the children are in bed. If I phone you at 12 noon CET, it is 8pm in sg and vicky verky. We are both well, after our flu jabs and we hope you are all well. Lots of love to you 4 from Mum and Dad

Grandad,

Have you checked your pockets lately for camembert and bread? Teehee.

love from venice

julian

Sorry to hear you have not been well margaret and also sorry we never got to talk before we left for Venice. Even though we started to prepare for our departure and our house sitter three days before, we had a series of unexpected mishaps last minute which had us panicking right up till the door of our rented apartment here, and that included a lost Babu, a screaming fridge, a broken key, a faulty camera lens and a terminally ill stuttering washing machine. Trips to Boulanger Electroménager were frequent and frustrating and they always wanted a document that was in the drawer at home...argh!

Anyway here we are and that all couldn't seem further away. we have had crystal clear days and now we have snow!! We are going to bed by nine and getting up at six to watch pink clouds and gondolas. We are cooking at home to avoid the expense of restaurants and to enjoy the marvellous local produce and fish, but loving the occasional wine bar for a glass of prosecco and some prosciutto on a bridge over a secret canal. Julian is finding his flow after an initial struggle, but obviously he has to take it day by day. Sometimes the muse just isn't anywhere to be found. meanwhile I am having a good stint on the book I am writing (yes I still am!) so it's a working break with the occasional foray into paradise!

Lots of love to you all. I know it doesn't look like it but we think about you every day.

Love to mum

Sorry to hear about this last episode, Dad. Sounds like you done good. Let Mum know she is in our prayers and I'll be in touch. Didn't get home till after 10.30pm and only picked up this post then on my new phone...

mum has a 'turn'

sorry to say that Mum had another of her fainting turns last evening. She had been having some toilet troubles in the day, but apart from feeling weak, nothing else was apparent, but just after she rang Cathy, I cleared away a few things and when I came back into the lounge she was standing against the radiator. I asked her if she was cold - no, but she had that strange look in her eye which told me she was going to faint I said, don't fall here, but it was too late and she sank to the floor. I made her comfortable, and considered what to do and decided to try and get her into the bathroom, where she recovered and tried to sit up straight. After cleaning her up we were able to struggle into bed on 'my' side. I made her comfortable and decided not to ask for help as she seemed to go to sleep immediately. As on previous occasions, she was ok, sleeping in bed and I left her until I felt that I could get into bed. She is bright and chirpy this morning so my decision not to call for help was justified, but I thought, oh,no, not again. But she is tough and seems ok now. Just felt that you were entitled to know, but don't worry unnecessarily.
Love from Dad

Lots of news for next year.. June 5th and 6th

We are hoping to revisit our successful cousin-friendly extended family Gite idea from 2006, for Gemma and Clive's celebration in the heart of England in 2009.

I shall be meeting Nic and Jen and Claire and Daniel at Heathrow when they fly in to the UK in the 'Nic' of time (chuckle) on 6th June and I thought it would be great if Edmund, Thomas, Kate, Jessica, Beth, Amy, Georgina, Jamie, Ruby and Millie could bring their Mums and Dads and Auntie Ruth and Uncle Julian along for a fun filled weekend!

I've provisionally booked a deal with all seven lets from Fiona Peace at Peace Haven Cottages in Honeybourne which is 3 miles from The Fleece at Bretforton, near Broadway for the 5th and 6th.

We shall have the cottages from Friday afternoon right through until Sunday afternoon unless there is general concensus to extend.

It would also be the ideal opportunity for a bit of a party for Grandmama Molly Morgan Merrow-Smith who will be 80 next year!

I'm delighted to report that Mother has regained her palour and is looking healthy and pink and is looking forward to seeing all of us together at last next year and no doubt will have a glowing tan from her trip to Mauritius in May.

Please let me know if you are interested so we can talk details and firm up the booking as soon as possible.
I shall be at Kings Sutton on Friday into the weekend laying ten railway sleepers to form a terrace at the rear of no.31 for bbq and family outside dining.. any offers of help accepted!

Snow, Snow thick,thick thick snow

Went to a Catenian function with two of my fellows, at the Royal British Legion Hall in High Wycombe last night and started off from here in rain, but by the time we arrived at RBL it was snowing, and continued until we left at 10.15pm. It was snowing quite hard, and to avoid the queue at Handy Cross we went along the A40 through quite heavy snow in Stokenchurch, until by the time we passed the Thame turn (j8) it had stopped and we were back to rain. Mum was unaware of this and by the time we arrive back at K/S she was asleep in bed. I had planned to attend Moyra Whelehan's funeral in Thame but Mum was not keen as she had tummy troubles,so we stayed in.End of story. Nice to read your blog, Pete. How long is Godspell on for??Lve to all Dad

The October boys

Yeah, happy birthday Nic, and to you for a couple of weeks ago too Steve. Glad we could meet up for that pub lunch. Sorry there's nothing like that planned for you, Nic but hopefully we'll be seeing you all next year.

While I'm on the brotherly love thing, I love your recent pics Julian. I swear you are getting better and better at this painting lark. And hi there Cath. Hope all is well and sorry we missed you when you were over the other weekend but we were all tied up with Stan's 90th celebrations. Love to the families all.

Back at Forty Green we have got ourselves a couple of cats now and are enjoying their company over a well earned rest at half term. Between times we are zipping about here and there trying to locate a car to buy as we are borrowing a friend's at the minute. Amy liked the car we looked at today but she doesn't have the staying power...she wants to buy everything we see!

Jan and the older girls are doing a production of Godspell this week in Thame's St Mary's, and in the day/night time those same older girls are sleeping rough in a make shift shack for a charity aid project called Slum Survivor. There are twenty four kids sleeping on Chinnor's 'White's Field' playground next to the windmill and Mill Lane School. They constructed a slum made out of wooden doors, cardboard, pallets, carpet offcuts and the like and are on a diet of rice and lentil dahl for the next five days. The weather is looking a little chilly for the time of year so we are hoping nobody gets pneumonia. They are only allowed to use the clothes they arrive in and may take a sleeping bag too...but it is not much protection against what the North wind seems to have in store.

Terry Fincher - Obituary

During the 1950s and 60s the photographer Terry Fincher, who has died aged 77 of a liver tumour, covered every major war and trouble spot around the world. He did five tours of Vietnam and his pictures regularly fetured in the Daily Express, in the era of its greatness. He was British press photographer of the year for 1957, 1959, 1964, and 1967, and runner-up in 1968, creating an unequalled record.

His coverage of royalty, political stories and show business stars made him the finest Fleet Street photographer I ever encountered. His ruthless competitiveness, quick thinking and foresight kept him ahead. He covered wars in a different way from his contemporaries, Don McCullin, of the Sunday Times, or the late Larry Burrows, of Life magazine. Terry was working for a daily paper, and thus to tighter deadlines, so he had to tell the story in one or two pictures.

I sat happily for hours listening to Terry talk about Vietnam. It was the story of a press photographer at war. In April 1968, he shared nights and days in a trench with Burrows on Hill Timothy, held by the US army. After a night when several soldiers were killed by incoming artillery fire from the nearby Hill Tom, the two photographers decided to dig a trench near the command bunker. Another uncomfortable night ensued as they realised, amid the shelling and rain, that the trench was too short, narrow and shallow.

When they awoke, there were dead bodies all around, waiting to be lifted out for burial. Terry wanted to be at home with his family, and deliberated, as the helicopters came in, whether it was time to get out, but he did not move. That day he and Burrows dug the trench deeper, longer and wider, put up shelves for their cameras, pulled ground sheets across the trench to keep out the rain and put up a sign - Hotel Timothy Press Centre.

In the evening an army padre joined them. They talked about how they did not leave an assignment until it was finished. "You don't take the easy way out," said Terry. Larry agreed that this was so. They understood the code. That night the shelling was heavier and the night darker. In the morning Terry asked his comrade what they should do that day. Burrows looked up at the dark sky. "Exposure one second at f2.8," he said.

Terry Fincher was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and raised in Putney, south-west London. Len, his father, was a caretaker at Putney library and his mother Ruth was a nurse. He was educated at Clark's college, Putney, which he left in in 1945 to become an electrician's mate in a clothing company near St Paul's Cathedral.

At lunchtimes he would wander down Ludgate Hill and stare at the national newspaper offices then clustered along Fleet Street. One day he saw a photographer carrying a large plate camera with flashlight attached, and off to an assignment. He told his mother about his aspirations, got an interview at the Keystone Press Agency - and was hired as a messenger boy. He recalled running miles every day in all weathers delivering photographs to newspaper offices. He had one pair of shoes and kept out the wet by stuffing cardboard in the soles. "Nothing," he said, "could dampen my enthusiasm for Fleet Street."

As a reward his mother bought Terry an old folding camera for 18s 6d (92p). One day in 1947, travelling to work, he spotted a policeman holding up the traffic, and shepherding a swan across Putney Bridge. He leapt off the No 14 bus, photographed the scene, and developed the plate at work. The picture was published in all three London evening papers - the Star, the Evening News and the Evening Standard.

During the late 1940s and early 50s Terry mixed with the Elephant Boys, a gang for whom weekends were for dancing and punch-ups around the Elephant and Castle district in south London. The battlegrounds were the dance halls and the fights were with north of the river gangs. Through those relationships, Terry became friends with some of the boys who later became the great train robbers.

Before long Terry was a photographer with the Keystone agency. The turning point in his career came in October 1956, when he was accredited to British forces as a photographer covering the Suez invasion, the first of his many wars. The following year he joined the Daily Herald and won his first award as press photographer of the year. In 1961 he joined the Daily Express and was given his own page, the Fincher File. It showcased photography from around the world, and his assignments that regularly scooped Fleet Street.

When I joined Keystone in 1967 as a junior photographer, Midge Aylward told me that "If Fincher's on the job, stick to him like shite and you won't miss anything." The first time I tried to act on this advice, Fincher, a man 20 years my senior, completely lost me. After the job was done, he asked me what I was up to, following him around so closely. I confessed my sins over a cup of tea and we became good friends.

After Terry left the Express, he freelanced for three months on the Sun. Then, in 1970, with his wife June and their daughters, he set up the Photographers International agency. It was based in the former railway station at Chilworth, Surrey, and supplied Fleet Street with news and features with high-quality material from worldwide assignments. Later, they specialised in the royal family, in particular Princess Diana, with whom both Terry and his daughter Jayne built up close personal relationships. Earlier this year, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Getty Images gallery in London.

Terry became weak and forgetful in his last year, but he still never left home without a digital camera, with which he produced beautiful landscapes pictures. Last month, June predeceased him. He is survived by his daughters, Jayne, Sally and Lucy.

PHOTOJOURNALISM LEGEND TERRY FINCHER DIES

Terry Fincher, one of Fleet Street's finest and best-loved photographers, has died aged 77 after battling a long illness.

Four-times winner of the British Press Photographer of the Year, Terry had a globe-trotting career which took him to many war-torn locations.

He also covered royal assignments and, along with his photographer daughter Jayne, built a close personal relationship with the late Princess of Wales.

Terry covered the Suez crisis, the Vietnam War and the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Amateur Photographer (AP) features editor Bob Aylott, a friend and former colleague, said today: 'Terry became weak and forgetful in his declining year, but still never left home without a camera in his pocket. His massive one-man retrospective exhibition organised by Getty Images - which ran for 6 weeks at Getty's gallery earlier this year - was hailed as one of the most successful shows ever held.'

Terry, who lived in Surrey, began his career as a messenger boy in 1945, when he carried a small fold-up camera in his pocket. Aged 15, he decided on a career in press photography.

His death, from liver cancer on 6 October, came just weeks after the death of his wife June on 19 September.

He leaves three daughters, Jayne, Sally and Lucy.

For a full obituary see forthcoming issues of AP.

Lovely photos

It was lovely to see photos of Mary and the children, and of course, also Nic and the children. The children both look so happy. Looks like being a busy December for you. What is the name of Mary's replacement??

Farewell to Mary

We were very sad to read that Mary is leaving. What a super help she has been. I know you will reward her well and we hope she will be happy starting her own family in Myanmar, although I don't relish the thought of her going to such an inhospitable country (Burma). Tell her we will pray that she will be happy. Love H&M

Goodbye Mary

After helping us look after Claire and Daniel for the last eight years, our wonderful Mary will go home this Friday to Myanmar to start her own little family (she got married last December). We'll miss her very much but wish her all the very best and we hope to see her soon.

On a slightly lighter note, Nic and I attended the Singapore F1 grandprix last month and had a really good time. Claire's having her final semestral exams at the moment and then she'll be on her long school break from the 23rd of October to 2nd January 2009!! I really don't know what she will do to keep herself occupied for that long long break! Daniel starts Primary one next year and will also have his long break during December.
love, Nic and Jen

The Guardian

Ruth, always full of optimism but married to an old grouch, sent out a press release to various newspapers, US and British, to announce the impending 1000th painting off old grumpy's easel. Today, as a result, I did a little phone interview with Jon Henley of The Guardian and a small piece (no doubt miniscule) should appear in the G2 section on Monday or Tuesday (depending no doubt on how many banks go belly-up in the interim). If you should see said article please buy a couple of copies (one for each cat perhaps) as we don't get the G2 bit here.

Two girls named June

Once upon a time there were two boys named Fincher. Their names were Michael and Terry. They both lived in Putney, south London.
Once upon another time there were two girls named June smith. they were not related, but each loved one of the Fincher boys. At a later time June Smith met Michael Fincher, through her brother Hugh, who worked with and played cricket and football with mike when they both worked for the Wandsworth Borough Council. Hugh and June moved to Oxford and in the course of time. Michael visited Oxford and their friendship blossomed and they were married. Hugh was Mike’s Best Man at their wedding. June and Mike moved back to London and lived just behind Brixton prison, in Dumbarton road. June and Mike had two children, Robert and Rebecca. Robert lives with wife Sandra in Bromley and is a successful photographic printer, working for the Daily Express. Rebecca has two children, Mark and Ruth. Mark is a successful restaurant manager and Ruth is a partner in Specsavers optician’s business in Maidstone , where she manages the contact lens section.
Mike continued to work in local government and moved to Hammersmith Borough Council, working in the Borough Engineer’s department. In time they moved from Dumbarton road to a new block of flats in Streatham and later to Arundel drive in Chelsfield, from where Mike commuted to London. Mike suffered from ill-health and eventually had to leave work as he had contracted multiple sclerosis, suffering for many years until he died in hospital in 1982.
Meanwhile the other June Smith and Terry also met and were married. They had three daughters, Jayne, Sally and……………….
and they lived in Surrey. Terry worked for the Daily Express as a press photographer and for years he was Champion news cameraman – traveling all over he world to get photos for the Daily Express and eventually was named press photographer of the year and appeared on “This is your life” TV programme. He was a very successful press photographer and in time opened his own private press photography business. His daughter Jayne also joined in the business and she gradually became a very successful press photographer, working as personal photographer to the Princess of Wales, Lady Diana Spencer. Terry became ill and his daughter Sally had a heart attack
June later contracted Parkinson’s disease and I have just learned that after suffering this debilitating disease for over 15 years, she sadly died in September 2008. RIP
Terry continues to live in Surrey but his illness is so bad that he spends all his life in a wheelchair.

Back Home Again

After a lovely week in West Sussex, being spoilt by Steve and able to take full advantage of Fay and Pete's lovely house while they were out in the Algarve - Pete playing golf with his son Jonathan and Fay shopping with Charlie (Jonathan's girl friend from Charlbury), we have returned to our little home in K/S.
The beautiful house (Fay and Pete Hayes') was like living in a five star hotel, with five star attention (from Steve) and looks as if it were built in the 30's but in fact, although old styling, the house is remarkably up-to-date with all the benefits of being built in the 1980's, with d/g, central heating from a massive Aga cooker in the kitchen, tv's in all rooms, an enormous d/g conservatory, en-suite rooms in two bedrooms but with a super bath/shower room for the other two bedrooms (actually one is Pete's study) and one where we slept. Steve took us to the well stocked nearby towns of Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and Cuckfield, and also to the coast at Brighton, where we lunched on fish and chips on the Pier - no, not the West one!!
12 miles and less than 10 minutes, and we were back to the house in Ansty. All good things come to an end and we set off up the A23/M23 on Sunday, with a stop at Crawley to visit the loo in the beautiful modern shopping centre and on to the M25 where we had to crawl along for about 20 minutes, due to an accident. All this meant we had to leave the M40 at Beaconsfield for another p, but we were soon back in our own village. Thanks to Fay and Pete, and of course, to our dear Steve.G&G

First Day Sunshine

I cut the very wet long grass on Thursday, leaving lumps of cut grass all over the lawn and spent Friday morning trying to tidy it all up, as we were out to dinner in the evening. It looked much better after the clear-up.
Just as we went out to meet friends at the Thai Orchid in Banbury, it started to rain again. Thanks to my blue disabled badge we were able to park outside the restaurant and we were joined by 18 others and we proceeded to enjoy our first Thai meal since Bankok. It was lovely and the meal included half bottle of wine each so we had a joyful dinner. Drove home OK and were soon in a warm dry bed.
Steve has completed the division of the garage and now we have a utility room 8x12 and a smaller workshop 8x7 for my tools etc. All we need now is some dry weather to enable me to get rid of unwanted stuff we still have in various boxes. On Monday we hope to travel down to West Sussex to help Steve "house-sit" for Fay and Pete Hayes, who are holidaying in Protuglar, the well known spelling mistake, as Pete and son Jonathan are keen golfers and both want to improve their game. We will be there for the rest of the week if anyone wants to join us!
PS we moved in here two years ago on 12th September 2006 and Pete and Jan have been married 20 years! G&G

We are on line again!

Sorry to anyone who has tried to contact us during the last week or so but we were talking to Nic and we saw a flash and heard a bang and everything went dead. Steve was with us and thought quickly, packed up the OSx and was off to John Lewis in High Wycombe in a flash. He was sent to their computer expert in Bellfield Road, Downley, who had been instructed by the shop to see to the OSx pdq. In a couple of days they rang me and said it was ready to collect - so I jumped in the Renault and set off for HWyc. As luck would have it Steve was in Edinburgh and also the M40 was locked solid as there had been an accident near the Thame junction 8a. It was too late to go cross country through Bicester and Oakley and I had to spend an hour and a half listening to my car's radio, until the road was cleared. I was panicking as it was getting near 5pm and I thought I may be too late to get to the shop. However, I left the M 40 at Stokenchurch and got up to Downley at 4.58. Just as the man was thinking of closing. He packed the repaired OS x in the car and I went home. Mum, of course was worried, but as it happened I was home by 6 and everything was OK. So that is that and all is now OK and here we are.
I hope Clive had a good birthday and as I write this we hope Jessica is also having a happy birthday. It will soon be 9/9 and I wonder if Pete or Jan can buy Amy some sweets in time for Tuesday. Unfortunately there is no post from here on Sunday, But we hope to get a card off on Monday. Love from Dad & Mum

Thanks, Pete and Jan for treating us to your (windy) garden for a lovely get-together on Saturday. It was a pity that the promise of sunshine in the morning did not continue in the afternoon!

Well done Gemma. I have just been looking at Mauritius on Google Earth - it looks fabulous. The 19th May 2009 should be a smashing day.

Gem & Clive

Hi everyone,

Well a lot has happened this week. The news is that we are definitely getting married in Maurtitius next May. Clive and I have had our requested wedding date confirmed as Tuesday 19th May 2009. We know that this falls in the UK school term which means some of you wouldn't be able to come, but you will understand that the date of the 19th is special (as its my Mum's birthday). The fact that it will be low season and the weather isn't so hot means its an ideal time for us to do this. Sorry if this is upsetting for you that can't come but we feel that traditional white wedding with sit-down reception/disco just isn't us and we want to make this event a reflection of who we are.

We're looking into having a webcast of the ceremony in Mauritius so that everyone no matter where they are in the world can log on and watch the live event. We want to have a reception/party upon our return hopefully sometime in June so that our close family and friends can all meet up and celebrate. But we'll send save the date cards to let you all know.

This weekend I have spent time at the laptop building a wedding blog as our idea is for people to visit this instead of me and Clive sending round robins and any wires getting crossed. So we'll be gradually adding information on there but if there is anything that isn't answered the blog, please feel free to email us.

And here they come!

I did email this jpg in as I received it in an email while on the road from Lukas a spectator at the Nürbergring, but here it is now. We have 18 mins of video if you can bear it. The circuit is hilly so we go down to 12 mph second gear while the BM's Porsches and Kwakkers come p*ss*ng past on the inside.
(pardon my Mongolian!)

Barbie boy

I have constructed a temporary structure on which to braai some meat this afternoon, since it looks like it may stay sunny. I reckon on the fire being lit around 3.30-4pm for a 5pm meal. Anyone who would like to throw some meat on the barbie is welcome to come along and enjoy whatever family atmosphere we can create at Forty Green. If you do come, a camp chair or two might be useful although we have the bench and a few other outside chairs....; plus don't forget to bring your own meat and something to drink - my wine collection has hit rock bottom! And if you think you'd like to come over, there's no need to phone first, but if you do let us know, we may even clean the bathroom. If no one comes, no bother...we'll be going ahead anyway and hopefully toasting a few marsh mallows to boot. If you are scared of ducks, don't fret, he has been rehomed in a farm at Bierton. So, if we see you we see you, but if we don't, enjoy the day doing whatever you're doing. Love to all.

Time for a Blogg

Sorry I don't post much but the blogg always gives me such a headache logging in, failing to recognise this and that. Today I seem to have had some joy.

So hi to all.

Congrats for all those who have sat exams and passed. My 8 year old has a national exam today for GEP screening, that's "gifted education program", if she passes and is selected to take a further exam and passes that we'll let you know. I heard from Dad that Thomas was also sitting for exams, so I'm sure you've done well too so congratulations to Jessica and Thomas.

For all those who have had a birthday since I last wrote many moons ago, Happy Belated Birthday.

We got no real news for anyone, so we have been sucking up the events across Mongolia and in Beijing. Congrats to Will & Steve for a Sterling effort, I didn't realise you have a time set to complete the rally so hard luck on that front but that's camaraderie for you, never abandon anyone. And look at our Brits in the cycling? I read the blogg written by Hoy I think and he was describing how he could see the opposition fold over GB's dominance in the velodrome, that's team work. We often forget how important these things are.

I've been skyping with Mum and Dad and Julian too recently. So keep it up everyone.

And to cap it all....

It's nice to be back from Spain (Wednesday afternoon) having prepared the house for possible rental and having had an injection of costa sunshine.

Steve and Will, I was following your epic journey all the way through Kazakhstan and into Russia again before I had to leave my Google Earth behind and head off to Spain. What a fantastic achievement! Brilliant. There must have been great fun, tension, emotion and madness out there on the Steppe. Look forward to catching up with you and hearing all about it.

As for Jess and Beth, we picked up their results yesterday and its all good news. Jess has everything she deserved after compressing most of her GCSEs into the one year working late into all those nights learning syllabus changes and catching up and resubmitting the necessary coursework. In the end she got;

English Literature B
English Language A
Science B
Additional Science A
Geography A
Mathematics A
Textiles A*
RE A
Art B
Citizenship A
Spanish A*
DIDA (computing) P (Pass)
Prep. for working life Pass level 2 (that's the higher level!)

All in all, that's 3 Bs, 6 As and 2 A*s plus the other bits and pieces.

Beth, who took fast track RE and Spanish this year got an A for Spanish and a B in RE.

Phew!!! We are very relieved and very proud of our girls, and are just so pleased for Jess to have done so well. She's got more As than I got passes...and Jan says the same.

Mongauloises in Mongolia

We arrived in Ulan Bataar on Sunday morning at 4am and had an hours
nod in the car before heading in to town to the End of the Road finish
line for 6am a mere 11 hours late for the party. We lost one of our
convoy here in this photo as Colin from Team TorbayTourists hit a big
rock the size of a turtle which stopped him dead raising his Panda off
it's rear wheels smashing the gearbox bell housing. 4 hours later we
had helped him get going again by straightening out his engine mounts
only to later fail as sand was scouped up into the clutch and starter
motor and the drive shafts snapped. We left him with a lorry driver
who took him back to the airport.
We now were 2 cars with Lloyd and Simon in their 22yr old 2CV. They
after many repair stops had to quit 31 miles from home with a sheared
suspension arm at 2am on Sunday morning. Steve and Will soldiered on
alone feeling their way through the myriad crisscrossing tracks in the
dark completely exhausted but triumphant. We fly to Berlin tomorrow so
should be back in Blighty shortly after. What a fabulous adventure it
has been and we met up in UB last night with the whole gang. The 2CV
Bristol Heroes had been rescued by a passing lorry when a minibus full
of Mongols hoiked the car by hand onto the truck and brought them in
to town. Naturally many beers later we were still swapping horror
stories but we knew that our little car had stepped up to the
challenge and we too had made it. Viva Les Mongauloises!

I spoke to Steve and Will a couple of hours ago, they are shattered but delighted to have reached UB. Steve was very emotional when he was telling me about having to leave Bristol Heroes stranded 30 km from UB. They needed to go on to try and get help to get BH to the finish but fortunately BH flagged down a truck and 10 Mongolians lifted their 2CV onto the back and they finished sat in the car on the back of the truck. Both teams have helped each other through some very tough times and are now going out to get proper food and have a few 'jars' together.

Bella ended the last few km's with one of the new springs flapping in the breeze and a puncture but they made it all the way. Well done and we all admire you both.

They are hoping to organise flights home for Tuesday.

They've made it at 0400 on 17th August 2008

Phone call from Steve to Gemma at 2200. Too late for the booze up at Dave's bar, but alive and tired. Whoopee!!! Now lt's time to look for somewhere to sleep. Well done my faithful travelers, love from Mum and Dad. One more gold medal!!

Almost there±

Fay says
Just spoken to Steve and Will and they have reached Arvaikheer. According to other teams its 400km to UB and mostly tarmac! They seem hopeful of joining the party later tonight! Spirits remain high and Bella is running well!

What a long way to go to sell a car!!

We are thinking non-stop about our boys and although it is 0610 on the 16th, our 'Singapore' clock says it is 1310 hours and we just hope they are still alive and nearly in U/B. Poor old Bella must have taken quite a bashing! "Keep right on to the end of the road", my beauties, as some old Scottish comedian used to sing. Love you guys Hugs from Dad and Mum.

Managed to get through to The boys just as they were driving into Bayankhongor where they need to find a welder! The additional springs have made a big difference to Bella but she has taken a knock at the front and the sump guard needs securing. Steve said this happened when they hit a boulder in one of the deep corrigated tracks! Bristol Heroes need a new shock absorber. They have been chasing one of the local buses - a large 4 x 4 - which takes 2 days to drive non stop at 45 mph from Altai to UB. At least they knew they were heading in the right direction!

They camped out in the desert last night and couldn't find any wood for a fire so set light to a bush!

They sounded very upbeat and now realise why they felt so 'odd' when we last spoke. They were beginning to wonder if they were ill but it was the effect of the high altitude.

Some teams say its 600km from Bayankhongor to UB and others say its 300km so I think there is some confusion between miles and km's! We don't really know how far they have to go but whatever it will be tough to reach UB in time for the party tomorrow night.

Repairs

Steve phoned at 5am (!) to say that they are having phone problems. The good news is that a mechanic who repairs the cars (that make it to UB) before they are auctioned for charity, has welded some additional springs on to Bella to give them extra clearance. Will said he didn't want to see under the wheel arches ever again! They are just waiting for Bristol Heroes to have a new bolt fitted and then they are off again.

They were travelling at 10 mph for much of yesterday so did not cover too much ground! Confidence is now high and they assure me they WILL make it.

I have just heard from the boys who are safe - thank goodness! They have had a nightmare ride but can see lights ahead hopefully Altai. Torbay Tourists who were in their convoy smashed their gearbox on a rock which delayed the convoy for 2 days - unfortunately TT have had to give up.

Steve and Will have been with Bristol Heroes but both have had some car problems. Bella has had another broken spring and also developed a 'clunking' noise and they have had to dump the roof rack to get rid of some weight!

They sound a little down and shattered! Hopefully the terrain may improve slightly and make the going a little easier.

Hello

Hi G&G,

Lovely to see you on Saturday and looking so well. You both looked tanned & relaxed though I hope you have more visitors soon. We got home on the train without trouble though we had to go up the line one stop to Banbury to catch the fast train back to Oxford. Surprising efficient rail timetable.

Talking of trains, the website I bought our Oxford- Brighton train tickets was from Virgin trains (www.virgintrains.co.uk). As we went weekday off-peak I bought the 'Saver' ticket type. We actually found after trying a few combinations that buying two singles was cheaper than buying a return so perhaps try that. (£62 was the total ticket price for two people). It was the cross-country route and you can reserve your seats online. I recommend sitting in the quiet zone carriage as people aren't allowed to use their mobiles and people have to wear headphones if using their ipods; so its easy for everyone else to have a little snooze. The route our train took was Oxford-Reading-Kensington (olympia)-East Croydon-Clapham Junction-Gatwick-Haywards Heath-Brighton, though I don't know if it differs depending.

Clive and I have the post-holiday blues which isn't helped by the incessant rain and our boiler troubles. Oh well the landlady is sorting out a man to come round and fix soon.

Funny sight on the way to work this morning. Walked over Magdalen Bridge as usual, and there was Jo Brand off the telly speaking into a camera. They were recording as we walked past so you may see the back of me and Clive's head on tv very soon.

Good news on the rally charity front. Clive's Auntie Ros and Uncle John donated some money so I've sent them a thank you. I think there is only another £250 odd to be raised so Dad and Will aren't far off meeting their obligation to the charity. I hope we hear from them soon but am sure no news is good news in this instance, due to mobile phone coverage or well lack of it in Outer Mongolia.

Off to see the new Batman film tomorrow as its 2 for 1 Wednesday tickets. £7.50 saved - Hurrah .

love Gem and of course Clive xx

Latest text: We're with others at a Gert Hotel for $20 for the two of us. Got through the border at 14.30. Took really slow third gear road! Like Donkey Lane surface but set on Mars or the moon if there were cows and grass there! Massive hill stopped us - 1 in 4 - half way up. Bella ran out of grip at the goose neck as we took avoiding action from boulders and deep ruts. Stopped and had a think as we were looking down at the peaks! A Spanish team in a fiesta were stopped at the same place. So we agreed on the best course. In first gear we went hell for leather all the way to the top. The fiesta followed and the two passengers had to walk up 2000m! A Mongolian has told us that we will be ok now for any other slopes as this is the worst. A few miles along the ridge and a perfect black tarmac road appeared (as if in a dream) which ran 30km into town! Will took over and smiled at the thought of driving in Mongolia. Scenery stunning and we're in Gert.

More news from Kazza

Latest text from Steve says that the welded spring has been fitted and strengthened by 2 Mongolian guys. Have had tea, honey and bread at a local farm and now the vodka is coming out!! Only 10 cars got through the border.

I am unsure whether that means that they were one of the ten cars or whether they are still waiting!

p.s. I would hate to be one of the mongolian guys forming the springs!!
PPS we will meet the train in K/s, Gem g/Dad

Brighton

We sheltered from the rain today in one of our favourite hideouts 'The Cricketers'. This pub was also a favourite of Graham Greene.

It's the law that you have to take a photo from your hotel room... (Kings Hotel on Brighton front). We were near the crumbling West Pier.

A seagull making the most of this ornate 'birdbath'.

The Royal Pavilion. I managed to take a photo without a backpacker in shot.

Now there's a funny thing

Hello G&G,

Looking forward to coming up and seeing you both on Saturday. Think we'll catch either the 12.07 or the 12.16 from Oxford (with one change) which means we arrive in KS around 12.40, so we could go out for some lunch in KS (are the pubs in the village still serving food?).

Clive and I are fresh from our couple of days in Brighton. I took this photo of 'the cheeky chappie' when Clive and I were in Brighton this week as I know you're a fan.

Just heard from the boys again. They are still waiting at the border - 5 cars have been let through including Teams Top Gun and Panda Hands who they convoyed with on the stretch to Prague. A Mongolian family who are in front of them are confident that they will all get through. We wait to hear!! They are hoping that if they manage to get through the Russian side today, they will wait in no man's land overnight and have been told that the Mongolian side is open tomorrow morning!

It appears that they arrived at the border with a scaffolding pole and lorry strap holding one side of the car up! Steve said everyone was very impressed with his modifications! A 'local' has welded the old spring for £5 but Steve still has to fit it back on the car. They have also been given a spare spring by an Italian team so at least they are a little prepared for more of the same or worse roads!

Steve said they absolutely STINK but they had to drive through the night to make the border, stopping only for a couple of hours sleep by the side of the road. They said that the scenery was stunning with some wonderful lakes that they wanted to jump into but were not able to make the most of it due to limited time.

They send their love to everyone.

Dear Family, have a great time

Steve and Will in Cemey, Cathy and family in France, Julian and Ruth in France, Pete in Spain, Nic and family in Singapore and all the rest in good ole YUKAY.
We had a lovely visit from Fay today and she took us out to lunch at the Rose & Crown in Charlton (one mile east of K/S) she will keep blogging any news of Les Mongauloise, after her phone call from Steve at 0545 this morning. G'night from Dad

Yes Dad!

I will send the photos.
Thomas and friends camped at the lake Sunday night for birthday fun, swimming in the lake(burrrr!) and cooking over a campfire, although it was apparently very cold in the night, they had a good time, and he came back ready for a day of lying on the sofa and eating chocolates and watching telly. Unfortunately we had had no electricity since, what we had thought was a power cut Sunday evening, but turned out to be a fundamental problem between out consumer unit (fuse box) and the electricity boards cable, so this involve all day with our friendly neighbourhood electrician hanging around the house waiting for the men from the board to come and disconnect us so he could fix the problem temporarily, more work to be done when he gets a new consumer unit and some other protection for us. So no cake or telly for Tom ahhhh!!!
And both John and I are a day behind and we leave for France on Thursday!!!!!!!
Love Cathy

Thank you Grandad for the euros, I look forward to spending them on holiday. It was great to see you last week love Thomas

What a rich harvest, Julian and Ruth

I am amazed at the variety of goodies in your ?small garden. Do you use square gardening or where do you find room for all those Chillies and tomatoes, capsicums and turnips. Just right for a stew.
We liked the postcards from Provence on Ruth's blog.

We have traced Steve's latest blog from Karaganda and he is almost into Mongolia. What a dull looking town with its large blocks of square apartments or flats. Keep going Bella and we hope Steve finds the reason for the warning light. Can you find another solenoid or have you got to push-start all the way to the next town? Continued good luck for you travels Steve and Will. Dad

julian

Julian took a day off! We went to an unpronouncable place and had lunch and bought pottery and got burned in the mini. It was lovely. It was the first time he has stopped humming manically for months. He also saved a hedgehog.

Going from this map it seems that the boys are right up there near the front!

Dad at last, birthday package arrived!

Thank you for the lovely words and bath goodies. I can't see a reasonable reason for it to have taken so long to get here, I thought that there was only one Llanddewi-Brefi, you had the address all correct, but you are two letters out on the post code, -Y----X.

I must say I have been heartily cheered up by your visit, Thank-you for driving all that way, it can be most tiring, I hope your shoulder isn't to sore.

Sorry if this seems abit disjointed I'm working hard, none stop cooking and long hours, it seems a very long week, cooking for loads of people and catering a lunch party for resident old and new on Saturday so I can't realy think straight, still they love my food, so the flattery keeps me going.

I hope all is going smoothly for our rally drivers, I'm not sure where to get news of them?

Much love Cathy

And...relax.

While the bigger girls are up at camp in North Wales (Benllech) we are looking to get out and about a bit. On Monday, Judy and Stan kindly looked after Amy for a sleepover while we went to an evening after wedding party. A colleague at work has married a nice Chinese lad whose parents are in the restaurant business. We enjoyed a fine spread at one of the family restaurants, the Wasungdan in Basingstoke, along with 200 or so other guests and partied into the early morning. A great time was had by us both and Amy appears to have had fun too making buscuits and entertaining Grandma's 'ladies' (friends, to you and me).

Yesterday we introduced Amy to the Lyde Garden in Bledlow and she insisted we go back in the afternoon for a picnic there too. We had a great big bonfire last night (a great way for a Merrow-Smith to relax!) and today we are off out with Amy, Judy and Stan for a pub luncheon at the Old Fisherman in Shabbington. We are probably going up to Kings Sutton on Friday...

Steve and Will continue to make great progress. I watched Charlie and Ewan last night going through Russia and Kazakhstan on basically the same route as the lads. Hope Steve and Will have just as entertaining a trip!

Thank goodness!

Thanks, Gem for straightening things out. What a lovely photo of Mother Russia at Volgograd. Looks really BIG, The photo was up with no text, until this morning. Now I understand things better. It is no relief to know that they are in Kazer as that is one big bitch of a country with no real roads, only beautiful views and, apparently beautiful people. I hope they hang out on good roads for as long as possible and don't try any mountain climbing in Bella. Love from G&G

Map error

The map is a bit confused so will need sorting upon their return so we know where they have really been. I do know that the boys haven't been to Finland or the North pole! They've been through France, Belguim, Germany, Poland, Czech, Ukraine and now Russia. Yesterday they were in Volgograd (Stalingrad) so they have seen 'Mother Russia Calling'.Today they cross the border to Kazhakstan so probably will be camping more. The car is running well and Will's russian is coming on so they are having a great time.

Our short repas in Wales

Thank you God for some nice weather. The best was on Wednesday, when we were in the car hurtling down the M 5/50 before we stopped at a garage for a p and p, though the pint was only cool orange juice, but the other p was welcome.
We arrived in LL/Brefi in record time though it is hard work to break the five hour run. The children had just broken up from school and on Thursday, a group of about a dozen boys and girls, accompanied by a mother started what has become an annual walk to some YHA's starting with that one about seven miles from Ll/B,up the valley and spending two nights stay in YHAs and quite a few miles walking. They arrived back in Nythfa on Saturday afternoon, tired and footsore; just in time to join in Cathy's birthday BBQ.
Going back a bit we went into Aber to get some grub for the planned BBQ and we were able to buy a super flat packed BBQ from Focus and spent the next hour fitting it all together
On Friday we were able to satisfy one of Cathy's long felt want/visits to Abergweslyn House and gardens, (near Llandeilo) where we spent a super day enjoying the delights of this lovely old house and gardens, in glorious weather. We had a drink to Jan's birthday (Thanks for your good wishes P&J) and on Saturday we (Some of us) spent all morning preparing for the garden feast, which started with a misty outlook, but developed into lovely hot sun. Cathy's garden looked super as she and John had planted many trees which were all in full leaf, since our last visit. The grass had been cut and it all looked lovely. Cathy and John's friends all turned up and when the children returned we tucked in to a beautiful BBQ meal. Sunday came and we had to say goodbye as we were running out of our tablets, and we headed Eastwards towards a rising sun and were home 5 hours later. Thanks Cath and John for putting up with us old codgers and making us so welcome.
It was a lovely visit (without the usual Welsh rain). Now it is Monday in K/s and the sun is still shining. Love to all from G&G

The long way round

Did anyone watch the programme last night where Ewen McGregor and his bike partner were travelling across Kazasakstan the long way round to New York?. They spent a day and a half driving out of their way as there was was some holdup when they could not get across a river. Seems to me that a journey to Mongolia via Finland and the Noth Pole is another long way round! Frightening, Man. Did you see the roads they had to negotiate? I know they were on motor bikes and so did not have to use the full width of the ?road. What road?? I hope Steve's hard work on Bella was worth it, as there were obstacles in the road every few yards. It must have been heaven when they could drive on metalled roads. One thing though the people were great. I only hope that the boys can stand it. G&G

Les Mongauloises

Having fun tracing Steve and Will's movements and placing map pins onto Google Earth. The map on their website seems pretty good only it doesn't seem to pick up the GPS coordinates so well from, I assume, Steve's phone. According to the map on the Mongauloises' site, the boys were in Finland when they crossed the Russian border...and prior to that they seem to have visited the north pole before crossing into the Ukraine. Sounds like they are having a great trip, though...a real eye opener. Keep it up lads!

с днем рождения cathy от Оксфорд и Волгоград!

Many happy returns returns

Had a lovely day at home entertaining Jan's ma and pa (and the duck), then took Jan out to Oxford to see a film. While we were watching Mama Mia, the girls did the bedtime routine and tried also to get themselves ready for camp.

Mama mia was a great fun, fell-good movie. Looks like they all had great fun making it and that rubs off on you. Only trouble is you end up driving home singing Abba hits all night!

It is now twenty to five in the morning and we hope to be driving up to Macclesfield shortly so Jess, Beth and their school friend Holly can catch the bus from Titherington Family Worship on to Benllech for the start of the camps later today.

Wishing you all well and happy birthday to you Cath. Enjoy the day, love from all down here in Forty Green.
