Elliott....

Dad is offline now as I have his eMac at home and so the only way to get hold of him is by that dodgy phone at home for the moment.

The number to reach Mum and Dad on from tomorrow evening is at their B&B and the details are at the bottom of this post.

The phone works for the time being until tomorrow, and Dad does appreciate friendly voices. (Thankyou June for calling them.)
Tonight Reg and Kaye over the road are having Mum and Dad over for dinner which is very good of them knowing what a pickle it all is.
All the stuff, Cath and I and the Polish guy packed in boxes and put in the second garage and the removal men are coming in the morning to take it into storage hopefully for a week only.
I called the estate agent in Banbury and as far as they are aware, it's all set up to complete at Kings Sutton on the 7th.
I called Dad's solicitor too and they'll ring me if anything is different to that.

Gem got news too

Well I went for a job interview at University of Oxford on Wednesday morning, thought it went well and was told be at least a week till I would hear anything. The next morning at work I got a call offering me the job, played it cool & told them I would think about it and they rang again the next day to ask again!! So Friday I told me bosses I would be resigning next week! To celebrate Clive & I have spent a sunny afternoon with friends in the Isis Tavern at Iffley Lock.

After tomorrows bank holiday we have a nice short week then a weeks holiday. We are going up to London this weekend to stay with Mandy, John & Ruby then on Sunday off to a wedding in St Johns Wood. Clive's cousin Graeme is gerring married to Leora at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue. After the ceremony we are all being picked up by red London routemasters & taken to the reception at London Zoo ( I don't know if we get to see the animals - last time we went to London Zoo I specifically wanted to see the otters but they were inside in their nest due to the rain!). Monday 4th is Clive's 30th so to celebrate we spending an extra day/night in the city. C's brother Martin is also coming over from Sydney, Australia for the wedding so we'll all have a good catch up.

Doesn't Meze seem like along time ago!

Packing up is such FUN

Not only Mum and me but also Steve, who has been with us since Friday evening, Cathy, who turned up on Saturday and Leonardo, a Polish friend of our estate agent, who works casually for £40 per day, who has been with us on Saturday and today, Sunday. Luckily the weather has held off and today it is like a spring day, with a little chill in the wind, but beautifully sunny. Cathy and I were up early to take a trailer full up to our local dump, using her big Renault, which has a towing hook. One of our ladies at Lions, who, luckily holds Mum and me in high regard, has helped out with taking stuff to chairty shops and also lending us her huge trailer. Cathy took the towing all in her stride and now the trailer is filling up again. What a lot of rubbish we have collected since we moved here. The furniture van will arrive on Thursday to take all ourgoods and chattels into store, until the purchase of Kings Sutton is complete. In the meantime, Mum and I will be staying B&B in Seaview, at a place Steve found on the internet. We look forward to a nice rest and will be able to clear up by saying farewll to friends etc and generally having a 'last look round', before we set off up north along the M40. Think of us as we do ofall of you. LOL Dad etc.

Margie's Clothes

Message for Mother.. I have reserved and am picking up 6 vacuum storage bags from Argos in Botley Road to start with, for Mum's summer/winter clothes, which I'll bring down with me Dad, on Friday night. (I'm booked on the Night Owl ferry crossing) These bags do away with the problem of foistyness and damp because you connect them up to your Dyson and suck out the air so a) you get more in and b) they can go flat into a box. They do clothes rails too which can get from Banbury to hang up your wardrobes when you've crossed the water so if you're worried, don't be, it's all in hand..they're only £6.99.

Nice to hear from you Pete

We were glad to read a blog from Spain. We hope you all had a good time in France and the Cuenca region of Spain. We well remember the wonderful fruits de mer in Calpe, with tables sagging under the weight of all thos prawns, langoustines, etc., etc. We like the idea of a holiday in Alicante. When we are settled down in K/S we will have to consider where it is best to fly from. I hear they have a new small airfield in Coventry.
Julian, how do we get the painting from here to Pa for Karen Black - is she, or was she the film star?? You said something about removing it from the frame. Please instruct me what to do to send it off to her. I am a little worried about handling such valuable merchandise!
Thanks again Steve for arranging a B&B for us. We like Seaview. A man has been here today digging up the concrete floor of the outside garage as there is a blockage in the pitch fibre drain, which goes under the garage

Problems with Beta

Just to let you know we are experiencing problems getting to the correct dashboard with Firefox now that blogger has gone to its new beta format and so I'm posting this using Safari since Blogger haven't updated Safari yet and I can still manage my blogs from there.

So, good news about the move being on. Hope it continues less stressfully from now on! If you need a break and some chill out time in which to relax, remember you can always swannee on down to Alicante. You could probably live here for six months without damaging your buget - your pensions would be sufficient for you to eat out everyday and rent a small pad in the medium term.

We (the whole family) spent hours looking round Ikea in Murcia yesterday (what a super town that is...great Baroque cathedral and nice tapas and Valor drinking chocolate into the late hours) followed by more brico shops and iron bannister suppliers today, after which we took a late afternoon on Calpe beach and enjoyed some big swells (uncommon here), warm waters (very common here) and beautiful fine sand (also rather common) underneath the Penyon D'Ifache. No jellyfish - they have all gone back out to sea, and the sun was hot until it dropped below the big buildings sometime after six. We packed up then, having had a continuous 90 minutes in the waves, and headed to Mercadona to buy some fresh fish. I grilled some garlic laced Dorada on the barbie and we ate Spanish style (i.e. after nine o'clock) with a glass of really nice cheap plonk. Ah, roll on the summer. It's back to school for me next Friday but we are squeezing this holiday for all it is worth. We're off to visit the City of Arts and Sciences park in Valencia tomorrow. This is the first of a two day visit after Jess won a Christmas card design competition last December and bagged free entry tickets to the whole complex for her and a few extras, to be used by November 2006. We'll take the other day sometime next week.
Don't know if there is copyright on this photo so ill say thankyou Hotel Sidi Sali for providing this image!

Fantastic news - Hurrah!

Ever so pleased to hear the news. What a relief for all.

We have exchanged

Our Solicitor has just phoned to say that we have exchanged. We have a man coming on Sat and Sun @£40 per day to held us pack as we should be leaving next Thursdy - Where to, I am not absolutely sure, Kings Stton or in store. it will make no difference to us

GOOD NEWS FOR ALL OF YOU

Well, wotdoyano, we are all back to normal, thanks to a very helpful solicitor and also to a super Christine, (our estate agent)
We are exchanging contracts today and completing on 31st. Thanks, Nic for your suggestion and in legal terms we have 'broken the chain', meaning that we are not relying on completing the Kings Sutton house, at the same time as completing here. We should now be able to sit on the sale proceeds and treat the purchase of Kings Sutton as a separate transaction.
Thanks to you all for your offer of support and a bed for the night. It looks, finally, as if it is 'all systems go'. Now back to the packing. Love from Dad

Monday, August 21, 2006

Dad, that doesn't sound right, that someone pulls out at this stage because you can't commit to a move date. I would definately get on to the solicitor by phone and have them sort it out. You've gone to all the trouble of selling up your stuff etc. If you are not concerned about loosing the opportunity presented in Kings Sutton, then you will need to let the solicitor know that you are not prepared to pursue the sale because your buyer has pulled out, but I think you need to get to the bottom of why she has pulled out. If you really want the Kings Sutton sale to go through, then let your solicitor know you can meet your purchasers demands if they are not totally unreasonable, and look for somewhere to stay temporarily. I'd rather have the money in the bank and then my options are still open.

I've put my Ivinghoe house on the market for 175K, hope to sell that before November.

Holidays aaaaaarh!

Steve, sorry I was caught in the vortex of mum and Dads house move when I spoke to you on Sunday and it had sort of wiped out the holiday.
Thank you for organizing such a fab holiday and 'birfday' and the gites couldn't have been better, we all had such fun and we had a sad few days when we moved to our other holiday destination as we missed you all so much, it was lovely see more of the Steeles-........ And to meet baby Ruby for the first time. Thank you all for my party and presents. Lots of love to you all Cathy xxx
p.s Thomas has asked me to thank you Gemma and Clive for the birthday card that you sent to him, he was very please to come home to birthday cards.

So Sorry!

Sorry to hear your news Dad! I didn't think she would pull out, because she had told you that her possessions are in storage and her money is all with the solicitor. If she thinks she will be able to buy another property within four weeks she is either deluded or not telling the truth somehow! You must feel exhausted by it all I'm so sorry. But you don't need to pull out of the purchase of the Oxfordshire property as Christine may find you another buyer anytime and then if you have pulled out on Mr Handley, you won't be able to sell as you will have nowhere to go to and of course you will have lost money. Just let your solicitor know that she has pulled out and get that drain fixed and let the professionals handle everything else. It is always difficult moving house and the unexpected always gets somebody. I know that when one feels stressed one feel the need to do something but I think you have to sit back and let it happen, spend your time enjoying the rest of the summer on the Isle of wight.

Message to all MERROWS

The person who had agreed to buy our house has now pulled out and we therefore will not be leaving YET.
We have instructed our agents to put the house on the market again at the original price and we will have to see what transpires. Many sad faces and many happy ones especially from our family and friends on the Island. For the time being we will not be moving up to Kings Sutton, but we have not yet 'closed the door'. I shall be writing to Richard Hanley, advising him that we will not now be able to buy his lovely little bungalow. What a waste of time and money - we are gutted.
Thank you to John and Cathy for helping us last weekend - you were both marvellous. Love to you all from Dad and Mum.

Internet Service Provider

To help Dad decide, click on UK ISP Review (bearing in mind even with a Sky Broadband package, you'll need to rent a phone line from BT ..no NTL at KS.)

..............................I've got for you Dad a Powerbook like Gemma's.

It's an Apple G3 Pismo which I have been updating, and with an Airport card fitted means you could do all your blogging from the sofa sat next to your missus (getting Mother more involved?) which will automatically load your pictures from the Canon Ixus v3 camera and from there up onto the blog. (The Canon does video too by the way hep hem!)

If you do decide to go with BT, there are options from them which come with a free wireless router which would make all of number 31 a wireless hotspot for you both. Blogging from the garden is very 'cool'.

From a security point of view, the emac and pismo could be great for backing each other up saving your valuable files so you have the same stuff on both)

Broadband

Broadband is free with any sky package so if you are going to keep Sky phone them up and see what they offer and talktalk Visit site offer a free broadband package with their inclusive phone deal talk 3 international - unlimited calls to Australia, Spain, France, Wales and 25 more countries (unfortunately not including Singapore - know anyone in Bangladesh?), and unlimited national calls for £9.99 a month, sounds good huh almost too good to be true?

http://www.uswitch.com/Broadband/

Who know's a good Broadband.

We will be having to give up our Wight365 server and are looking round for a replacemnt. We used to have Tiscali, perhaps I will try that one again. Then there is AOL and BT Internet and of course Talk Talk (NTL). Any ideas??

Funds received OK

Hi Nic and Jen. Thanks for your note etc. Funds are safely in your bank. Everything else OK although we are still not signed up 'Ready to Go'. Our buyer is impatient to get in but cannot until we have a definite place to sleep. Solicitors seem to take a long time to talk to each other. We have just had a delivery of boxes to make up, from our removal man. Looks as we are going to spend the weekend making up boxes and wrapping glasses and best china up, to pack.
Hi Pete and Jan, are you back home yet? Such fun to see you all and we look forward to the next Merrow-Fest!
Cathy and John are getting ready to catch the 9.30 ferry this morning on their last lap back to LL-B. We will miss them all. Yesterday we went to Bonchurch to our 'favourite' restaurant, which has bouillabaise on the menu, lobsters, king Prawns and other lovely thing, such as Moules. Mum had sardines, which she felt were too 'small bony' for her to thoroughly enjoy, All washed down with some very nice pink wine.
Julian and Ruth. We hope you enjoyed having your young visitors. We loved the face of a boy, Julian. I doubt that it was a p from provence, but lovely just the same. Who is the beautiful boy??
Did you have a good test run on your proposed new car, Gemsie? Looks to be a nice little mover. Thanks for everything, Steve - we hope to see you soon. We will keep you all informed as to our move - could be September! Love from Dad.

They're 'ere

After fighting their way out of the cross channel port, where two large ferries were fighting for the right to discharge their passengers, John managed to get to the IOW car ferry just in time to miss the 10pm, leaving them on the dock, in a queue for the 11pm. They finally arrived here and Kate and Thomas were soon in bed, leaving us to discuss the holiday and their exchange in Monasque. Luckily the Renault behaved itself in the latter stages, and they then began to realise how big France is, especially when you are up against time to get to the channel ports. Anyway, everything finally worked out well and we have a house of sleeping travellers.

just read your ebay email

I tried to follow the bidding but got lost, as I forgot my eBay numbers, or mine did not work. I eagerly await the American lady's $ cheque. Should come in very handy. Perhaps will go towards an HD tv or a plasma set to while away the winter evenings. Love that Mini - Italy here we come. Eh? Have you got any vacancies for later on - perhaps October?
We are expecting Cathy, John and family later on Cathy did say about 10pm.
Just in case your lovely painting goes from us I have taken a top quality photographic print of it as we both love it so. Makes one think that eBayt could be one of your answers to all the faithful who wait to see your 'p from P ' on their email?? We go to sign our contract tomorrow. Da'

Oh1 Mr Toad

What a lovely mota. Brmm Brmm. How do you get four elephants in a mini - Two in the front and two in the back Boom Boom. Now there is no excuse for not coming to Kings Sutton!! Incidentally, we have found a further three self portraits, an alpenstock, a large wooden frame and varous amounts of water colour papier, plus an old brown haversack. All up in the loft!! If you wantem you'd better say before the skip man comes. Your loving Dad
P.S We are signing the contract on Wednesday.
PPS I have just sold my box of tools for £10 from a man who heard that I had some woodworking tools in a garage sale. Now we can eat.

The New car..

.. a mini cooper convertible!! Deposit paid this morning and it will be delivered in October, we will probably be somewhere (else) in europe till December or possibly next year! just enough room in the back for Poskie and Manon, bless, what a picture. We went for the Pepper White Cooper version and Ruth (Who was sent with Cello case to close the deal) got the £500 Harman Kardon speakers thrown in ... so you'll hear us coming BBBRRRRRROOMM TOOT TOOT

Saturday, August 12, 2006

What a tiring day we have had.

Up at 730 to clear the remaining stuff from the loft, when the bell rings and there is a woman who wants to know when the sale starts as she wants to buy a small bicycle for her 5 year old daughter. £3 and its your, I say. Our sale has started. Bad luck on our next door neighbour who advertised his stuff in the local advertiser, but the people came to ours, instead and we were nearly £100 better off. So tiring though. If Mum had not been watchfull, we would have had people inside the house, round the back garden and in both garages trying to force us to sell what we wanted to keep. We managed to shift qute a lot of stuff, including the little stone lady on her plinth, some stone pots and birdbaths. What a day - I couldn't do that many times.

Is this the end of the line?

The removal man has been to give us an estimate, we have a great big skip in the front garden, ready to receive all our rubbish and things we cannot possibly use in Kings Sutton. Nobody wants to buy our out of date furniture or our white furniture. Fridges and freezers cannot be dumped in the Council tip, except privately in the back of our car. We are two old people, faced with a mountain of things to shift, although the removal man said don't bother to empty your drawers and don't bother about packing glasses, china etc as he will send his wife and daughter along to do all that. Does anybody want anything before we consign it to the skip. Ladders, tools, garden spades etc. Electric saws, drills, Books, Biographies, reference books, hard backs, wine glasses, plates, dinner sets. good stuff, wall plates. We have just heard that our buyer has signed her part of the contract - we are waiting to be called tosign our bit. It is now 720pm and the solicitor's office is shut until monday, so we will not know any more until then. One gets very impatient as time goes by with nothing apparently happening. These solicitors want to know such stupid things, which even I know are not necessary to know and I am only a simple simon. I have put an advert in the front of the garden about a garage sale at 10.30 tomorrow morning. I hope we sell something!! We have almost cleared the loft and I have given all my old suits to Charity Shops. If I ever need anything like that again, I will have to buy it. Seems unlikely. Reg says wshy throw it away if you can get a couple of quid for it. We will have to see if it is worth the bother. June has sent us a lot of super photos of the holiday. We did all have such a smashing time. Thanks to our lovely Steve, it all went super.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THOMAS

The calendar tells us that we are approaching 4th August, Thomas's magic day, so if you are able to read this, HAPPY BIRTHDAY THOMAS. We have sent a card to LL/B and if we knew your current and present, address we sould send you a little gift. I hope you are enjoying a different part of France. You will have to tell us all about it when you get here on 13th.

Home again, home again, clickety click

After a swot and hetty journey through France, a day in East Hill with June and a quick dash up motorways to Kings Sutton, where we met Steve, had an all-day breakfast in Banbury, a quick visit to Gemma and Clive Hi Guys, we did a quick dash down motorways to Portsmouth and caught a 9pm ferry home to a welcoming Hazelbank. Thanks for your support Steve. Yesterday we were both bushed, but Mum wanted to make the old washing machine work and I had some letters to write, so we each did our bit and watched telly in the evening.
Our cross Paris taxi ride was not without its panic as we got snarled up in some sort of student rally within sight of the Gare Du Nord and our driver taught us a few new gallic words. June, Mum and I dragged/carried our bags for the last few hundred yards and lauckily we were directed up the escalators to the waiting area for the Eurostar. More drag/carrying of our heavy bags up and down the platforms until we settled near the rear of the train. Talk about a speed ride. We were soon away from Paris and under the Channel, and in no time at all were arrived at Ashford, where again, I made a cardinal error. Seeing a flight of stairs looming up, I moved towards what I thought was a downstairs travelator, only to discover that it was not one and instead, was a steep escalator. I can remember trying to guide a trolley down an escalator with a load of stuff bought from Ikea when everything ended up in a heap at the bottom. This was similar, although June took much of the weight of our trolley and baggage. We still ended up in a heap with the escalator humming away, Mum screaming Hugh Hugh and the now folded up escalator steps smacking me in the back. Mum had the sense to bash the red button and we scrambled off with only a gashed leg (Pour moi) which was bleeding slightly and embarrassment all round. Our taxi driver (Ron) was waiting at the gates as we were a bit late, but we got back to June's otherwise unscathed. Was my face red after we had crossed the Thames under the Dartford Tunnel, next day as we were both busting for the proverbial and I turned into an MSA (which I hate, as the signs are so confusing) I drove into the lorry section and could not get out, finally finding myself back on the M25, but FACING THE WRONG WAY!! So we go with the flow and up and over the lovely bridge, arriving at a garage in Dartford town where we were able to relieve ourselves, before again heading towards the tunnel. 29 miles of useless journeying, a now relieved Mum and Dad and the rest of the M25 without a map (which was the cause of all my road mistakes, as I was trying to remember where and how, to get on to the A5), I knew it went near Silverstone (only a few miles from Kings Sutton)) Instead, I went on to the Aylesbury turn which is more confusing than I remember it. Mum did not want to join the M 40 to go past High Wycombe etc so we eventually got in to the Tring By-pass, which now also by-passes Weston Turville and then up the Bicester Road past where Pete and Jan used to live until we arrived in Bicester, then joined the M40 at junction 10 and with the use of ours and Steve's mobile phones (he had arrived at the bunglow at Noon, the appointed time) and he was able to guide us through the maze of lovely little villages in that part of South Northamptonshire, until we arrived at our soon to be, new home. What a journey!! We were almost persuaded to pay an exhorbitant amount for all the carpets, but decided to let him sweat a bit before making an offer. It is good quality and would save having to take it all up and get new stuff, but he wants about £1000 for it!! He is leaving all his plants in pots, which saves us from bringing up all ours in Wootton, and also a very unclean cooker which makes Mum shiver. We will have to use the microwave oven until I get round to cleaning the oven and repair or renew a broken part of the eye-level grill. There are other things he is leaving but we will have to see what we need not take before making any decisions

Anyone fancy Top Trumps?

Your Best or Worst motor £400 bought off Dad.. He'd tow me round Chinnor with his Saab to get it to start.. so new engine and off to ...
