SITTING AT MY APPLE

When the screen showed that Nic had been trying to Skype me. All was fine except that I could not hear a word he was saying. Tried all the F keys without luck until he eventually got me on the house phone and we communicated via the phone for 15 minutes! What us wrong??. Any ideas anyone?? Dad
