The Scots Guards were being given the freedom of Wantage, as the last Lord Wantage was a member of the SGrds. Lord Wantage was a war hero given the Victoria Cross (Crimea War I think), and was also an MP. He helped found the organisation that became the Red Cross, so was a great ally of Florence Nightingale.
Lord Wantage died in the early 20th century and did not have any children so the title died out. He is buried in his home estate in Ardington.
Thanks for putting this up Dad. Where we were standing we didn't have a great view due to the deep crowd. Apparently the Duke of Kent was there too.
