We are doing the family tree via ancestry.co.uk, and we doing pretty well using our free 14 day trial membership. Cathy is very keen too and loves the idea of following the stories of the various families through the centuries. Being a lady she wants to know about ladies things and is interested of course in the untold stories of the of the women in the family. As far as Granddad Len is concerned he appears in Google search as the author of Prison Screw and of course in the records of the Queens Royal Surreys but his gesture to donate his war medals to the regimental museum seems to have been thwarted by light fingers. All my activity has been done remotely on ipad app and clicking buttons on web browsers linking up from Dad's account. Great Grandfather William Smith from Dad's diary married Lilian Spooner from Woking in 1897 and appears on the Merrow Village 1911 census as having been married for 14 years originating from the village of Croydon. He died on 5th Feb 1922 which was 3 years after son Len was discharged from the Queens. To be continued...
Steve...I found out that william hollowway married clara turvey from reading, and that w.g morgan married mary e hemming from india..1901 cenus they also had her little sister Hilda age ten living with them, just thought I wonder if this could be the grandma smith that mum talked of although she thought that she was irish haven't seen any Smiths on mums side yet...I put all this on a family tree but then somehow lost it.
