Can you find the pound? Three flatmates put in a tenner each to buy a £30 radio at a store. The shop assistant notices on the system its been reduced by a fiver. He gives them £1 back each and naughtily pocket’s £2. So they’ve paid 3 x £9 each (£27) and the assistants got £2 (so that’s £29). Where’s the other pound?

Each man paid $9, total $27. Assistant has $2, $27-2=$25 which is what the shop had.
From the standpoint of the original $30. Each man has $1.
Assistant has $2, shop has $25, total $1 x 3 = $3
2+25+3=30
Not supposed to mix income with expenditure that's why they didn't tally. Can't add what one person has to what someone else has paid, have to subtract.
