Edinburgh.
My old godfather's daughter Joan, was married to a Major in the Scots Greys and when he retired from active duty he had the job of custodian at Edinburgh Castle. Sadly he died some years ago. Their name is Haynes and Bill finished up as a Major. Joan, his widow, is in her late 80's but I have known her all my life as her dad, Cyril Tutton, George Cross, was at Parkhurst Prison on the staff at the same time as my dad, and was his best friend. Hence he was my godfather. He followed us to Brixton Prison and again to Wakefield, where he retired as Chief Officer. After Bill's death Joan, of course, had to move out of the Castle and now she lives near Dalkeith. We still hear from her every Christmas, always the first card and usually with a picture of the Charge of the Scots Greys, at Balaclava. Cyril or my Uncle Tut as I called him, received his Empire Gallantry Medal, from George V in about 1925. This medal was awarded to civilians for bravery, (his was for getting a mad prisoner off the roof in Parkhurst amid a hail of roof slates), and was changed to the George Cross by King Goerge IV. Every year the G.C's and V.C's (the Military equivalent) were invited to Buckingham Palace in honour of their bravery and Cyril and his wife Kit, were never more proud to accept the invitation. Hugh
