The Skype's the limit

Hello Folks
it's Steve here.. with his funny vernacular writing style
with a thought for Christmas :)
If we wanted to get a bit organised saving some phone bills, we could use the 'net' to make FREE international phone calls!
How does that work then I hear you cry?

Ah oui! Qu'est ce que ce que ca?

look!

'Voice operated internet protocol' ( VOIP), is system broadband internet subscribers can use to link up to one another's computer and with a suitable microphone connected (even the built-in one on the laptops and powerbooks) these can be used as fancy telephones?

After all, what is a mobile phone if it is not a little tiny hand held computer linked up wirelessly to the normal phone network?

Well the answer is that all mobile phones and digital devices like your Freeview set-top box TVs are basically quite similar.
On all these systems, you have a computer connected to a screen connected up to other computers via telephone lines sometimes over radio waves.

With mobile phones though, one of the components is a little memory chip which belongs to the phone company used for metering calls... the sim card! Your laptop doesn't have one of those hence no charges!

BT are pooing their pants!

This is all cutting edge stuff but that makes it more exciting and at the moment the software is free.

Go to skype and get a free download, signup (for nothing) and get a user name.

You'll have guessed mine oui ou non? and give us a call!

Or email me your user name or something and lets try it!

I've used it to play cds to my mobile, and (which is a bit pointless but) the quality is superb..

If you like you can buy credits for €10 each and ring normal numbers, mobiles and so on, but for members with registered usernames, computer to computer it's all free! (if you're on broadband) if you've got a computer and you're on the phone tee hee!
